The Knights of Columbus is a lay Catholic family faternal service organization. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to all practical Catholic men in communion with the Holy See, age eighteen and above. The term practical Catholic implies that a person accepts and abides by the Commandments of God and the precepts and tenets of the Catholic church.
On October 2, 1881, Father Michael J. McGivney, 29-year-old assistant pastor at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut, brought together a group of laymen with whom he discussed his dream for a Catholic faternal benefit society. It not only would assist widows and orphans of deceased members through its life insurance program, but also would boost members' sense of pride in their Catholic religion. The Knights of Columbus was formally launched in early February, 1882.
The officers of the new Catholic organization chose the name Knights of Columbus to honor Christopher Columbus, the Catholic discoverer of America. The word knights is also significant. We are ever mindful of the knightly qualities of spirituality and service to church that is embodied in the Knights of Columbus. The Order has evolved into a service organization with a strong family orientation. By the end of 1897 the Order was thoroughly rooted in New England, along the upper Atlantic seaboard and into Canada. Within the next eight years it branched out from Quebec to California, and from Florida to Washington.
The Knights of Columbus remains headquartered in New Haven, but is now present with nearly 13,000 Councils in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico and several other countries.
Here at Holy Trinity the Knights enjoy fraternity with one another as they provide food and refreshments for parish gatherings at our pavilion and more recently in our new parish banquet facility. Also, in our parish the Knights provide rosaries in the chapel and rosaries and prayer booklets for the sick in the hospital. The Knights also contribute significantly to the ministry for the Hearing Impaired throughout our state.
The Knights have evening meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. There are various social activities and events throughout the year. If you are not a Knight, join now and be involved!
Our Council History
In August 1988, Ben Paoletta inquired with Father Fater about the possibilty of forming a Knights of Columbus Council within Holy Trinity Parish. Father Fater heartily endorsed the idea and gave the go ahead to proceed.
Contact was then made with a Supreme/State Council District Deputy, Joseph MonteVerde, who was asked to assist in forming the Council. Father Fater announced in the Bulletin and at the masses that a K of C council was being formed within the parish. At the first organizational meeting held in September 1988 at the Encino Park Hall, twenty-five men from the parish attended which included six members who were already members of the K of C.
Father Fater agreed to be the Council Chaplain. The General membership meeting was established for the first Tuesday of the month with the Officers meeting held on the third Tuesday of the month. The general meeting was held at the old Hallmark-Bradfield Realty office trailer on Stone Oak Parkway. Officer meetings were held at the Parish offices in the Afton Oaks Office Building.
In October 1988, the Degree Team from the St.Thomas Moore K of C Council held a First Degree at the Encino Park Hall. Eighteen men received the degree. The Council membership was now twenty-six but we were short of the thirty-person requirement to make application to the Supreme Council to Charter the Holy Trinity Council. In November 1988, after additional Degree ceremonies were held, the Charter application was made to Supreme with 36 members. In December 1988, the Supreme Council chartered Council 9967.
